Michigan Association of Fire Fighters

Fire departments represented by Michigan Association of Fire Fighters (MAFF) are hosting events throughout September and October in honor of National Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 6-12, 2019. Fire Prevention Week is observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which Oct. 9 falls to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of Oct. 8-9,1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). This year the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire prevention week theme is “Not every hero wears a cape.   • Augusta Charter Township Fire Department Open House
    Time: Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019

    Fire trucks and Huron Valley Ambulance will be on display. The event will also feature a smoke house where adults and children can learn fire safety, spray the fire hose and knock down a pretend fire. Augusta Township Fire Pup will visit the children. There will be free food and drink, literature and coloring books, and raffles for gift cards and other items donated by community businesses.
  • Burton Fire Department Open House

  • Chelsea Area Fire Authority Fire Safety for Children

    Fire safety instruction is geared toward children focusing on Stop, Drop & Roll; how to recognize smoke in house; having an outdoor family meeting place; navigating cell phones for emergency use; not looking for pets; opening or breaking windows and throwing stuffed animals outside to help firefighters find trapped individuals; placing blankets in front of cracks of door and not hiding during fires.   • Chelsea Area Fire Authority Open House

    The event will feature a smoke house with a video playing inside for children to watch which teaches them how to crawl and get out of the house safely. Also featured are bounce houses, a petting zoo, jaws of life for children to cut cars, spray fire hose, face painting, balloon animals, fire truck tours, Red Cross and Huron Valley Ambulance on scene, popcorn, doughnuts and cider.

    Applefest is an arts and crafts festival. The event will feature a Fire Safety House, purchased by Applefest for fire department demonstrations. The Fire Safety House has a living room, bedroom and kitchen setting with smoke and an escape ladder. A new fire truck and squad vehicle will be on display and fire prevention materials and kids fire helmets will be available.

  • Macomb Township Fire Department Open House

    The event will feature an extrication demonstration with the Jaws of Life, vital signs stations, tours of the station, trucks on display, fire safety materials, and a fire house where children can squirt the hose.   • New Baltimore Fire Department Annual Pancake Breakfast

    Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Guests are asked to make a donation, which will be given to charities such as American Cancer Society, local burn camps and the Lions Club. The event will feature fire truck displays and many fire safety materials including tips for safely storing items in garages and around heaters and furnaces. There will be a 50/50 raffle and activities for children. New Baltimore Fire Department Association t-shirts are for sale to support local charities.

The fire department also offers a wide variety of fire safety programs to the public including: fire and fall preventions, File of Life, free home fire inspection, free battery changes for smoke alarms and free smoke alarms if residents lack a functioning alarm, and free car seat safety inspections for residents. They also offer First Aid, CPR training, and Fire Extinguisher classes for residents for free and a nominal charge for businesses.

  • Troy Fire Department Open Houses

    Visitors can tour a station, meet firefighters, look at the vehicles and equipment up-close, and watch various demonstrations. Stations will provide fire prevention related handout materials along with light refreshments. There will also be t-shirt raffles and coloring contests for the kids.
    Parking: There will be limited parking at Station 6. Additional parking with free shuttle at Hamilton Elementary School, 5625 Northfield Parkway. Station 4 has additional parking available across the street at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 2160 E. Maple Rd. For Station 5, visitors should park at Troy Union Elementary School, 1340 E. Square Lake Rd. There will be a complimentary shuttle to Fire Station 5.
  • Utica Fire Department Open House
