MAFF Supports "Learn Not To Burn" Fire Education Program PDF Print E-mail

MAFF is a strong supporter of the Learn Not To Burn teaching program developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Hundreds of documented saves, including self-preservation by very young children having gone through the program, are attributed to this very useful curriculum. The National Education Association (NEA) has approved it and teachers across the country have applauded it.

Since teachers themselves may not know all there is to know about fire safety, MAFF has distributed Learn Not To Burn curriculum binders and resource books to hundreds of schools in 74 counties. It is the intention of MAFF to provide these resources, free of charge, to elementary schools and preschools in all counties in the State of Michigan.

The resource books were designed for children in preschool and grades K-3 and have been labeled with grade levels. There are reproducible activity sheets, discussion points, and background information for teachers on fire safety lessons. All of these can be integrated into subjects such as language arts, math, art, health, safety and science. Family involvement is strongly encouraged. Information includes a home emergency escape plan, taking inventory of home smoke detectors, holiday fire safety tips, and reviewing fire safety ideas for baby-sitters.

The Michigan Association of Fire Fighters supplies Learn Not To Burn resource books, free of charge, to elementary and preschool administrators. If any MAFF member is aware of a school in need of this material, please contact your representative to make arrangements for the delivery of it.
