MAFF's top officer brings heritage of service to leadership role

The latest edition of the Michigan Association of Fire Fighters "Professional Services Profile" describes Michael O'Lear's background as "extraordinary."

That might actually be an understatement. O'Lears, MAFF's Director, brings to the organization a family legacy of three generations of both public safety service and union involvement. His wealth of personal and professional experience, along with the valuable insights that have been woven into his heritage, uniquely qualify him for the role.

A bold declaration? Well, consider the following points:

He is a veteran Macomb Township Fire fighter and EMT;

He was a leader in the effort to establish MAFF as his local association's union;

He negotiated two contracts for the Macomb Township Fire Fighters Association/MAFF while chairman of the group;

His father is a former president of the Centerline fire fighters union;

His mother was an active participant in union affairs throughout her years as an employee of the Centerline School District;
His wife is a union officer in another school district;

His brother is a former president of the Sterling Heights fire fighters union;
His son is a fire fighter and a union member.

All of these facts certainly add up to an amazing set of credentials. However, O'Lear asserts, what counts most is what they add up to in terms of serving MAFF's members.

"From my own years of experience, I know what it means to be a public safety professional and an active union officer," he said. "Meanwhile, both my heart and my mind always have been involved in public safety service and labor relations participation.

"I'm proud to say that these values are my family's tradition. I'm equally proud to put them to work on behalf of all members."
